What we were called out for
This house has a long-standing problem with fat building up in the kitchen waste. Rather than wait for it to block again and call someone out in a hurry, the customer books it in to be cleaned before it becomes a problem.
What we did
Fat is different from most things that block a drain. It goes down warm and liquid, cools on the way along, and sets on the pipe wall — so the pipe narrows from the outside in rather than filling up in one spot. That is why a kitchen waste with a fat problem keeps coming back: rods bore a channel through the middle and leave the rest of it lining the pipe.
We used a RIDGID K9-12 flexible shaft machine for this. It runs a chain head along the inside of the pipe and scours the build-up off the wall, taking the bore back out to the pipe itself rather than just reopening a route through the middle.
The result
A kitchen waste running at full bore instead of through a narrowing channel of set fat. Booked in and dealt with in one visit, at a time that suited, with no washing-up backing up into the sink first.
That is the argument for doing this on a schedule where a property is known for it. A maintenance clean is a planned appointment. The same job as an emergency is a call-out, usually at the least convenient moment, and it costs more.
